The Power of Words

As a child, do you ever remember being told, “Don’t take it so personally; they’re just words” or, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names won’t ever hurt me?” On the flip side, do you remember how good it felt when you were praised by a teacher for a “job well done” or you were recognized for some positive trait? Learning the impact that words can have, as well as how to use them responsibly, are parts of growing up.

Inquiry

This month, target how it is that you use words in your coaching —

  • Where can taking the time to offer an authentic acknowledgment increase the power of your coaching?
  • When do you call forth someone’s magnificence by telling them the hard truth?
  • How will you remember (and give yourself permission) to do more of both?
